The lower floor extends to the rear of the site requiring temporary works some 7m high during construction.
The rear face supported a house within 1m of the top of the excavation. To maintain support for the house the following stages were designed.
Install steel members to a depth of 6m from the surface.
Excavate 2.5m in front of the steel members inserting timber boards between them as the work proceeded.
Install soil nails at the excavated level.
Excavate a further 2.5m and install sprayed concrete and steel pins.
Form a bench and complete the excavation.
The building houses the popular Huckleberry café as well as offices and apartments.
