The dwelling consists of a garage at street level that extends beneath the two storey house.
A shaft 9m below the garage slab accommodates a piston needed to push a lift from the garage through the house and up to a roof deck.
Drilling the shaft encountered very firm rock at a depth of 10m below the surface and the last 2m took two hours to complete.
The house has a suspended concrete slab 'bridge' 7m long at first floor level which acts as a circulation route open to the gallery below.
The slab is supported on reinforced concrete block walls that serve as a central core to resist seismic loads.
A double height glazed atrium gallery also required some interesting steel construction. Since part of the glazed wall face projects out steel portal frames were installed to carry seismic and wind loadings, are this bold structure is expressed internally.
The house provides a unique and ongoing pleasurable experience.
